I’ve been hugely busy in the run-up to Christmas, and almost missed this very important admission by Google. Microgenerator uses vibration to produce energy.
Operational in industrial environments with vibration levels down to 25 mg, PMG7 converts kinetic energy from vibration of equipment running at mains frequency (50 or 60 Hz) into electrical energy. It is designed to power wireless and battery-free sensors, microprocessors, and transmitters for accurately monitoring condition of plant equipment and machinery. It generates up to 5 mW of energy, enough to power wireless transmitter sending up to 6 KB of data every few minutes.

Temporary absence

For the next few months I will be on a combination of parental leave and vacation. Well, that isn't completely true since I still have one week of work to get through, but when June comes around it's time to switch off and unplug my computer.

That isn't entirely true either. I won't actually be unplugging my computer all the time, but I will not be checking my email regularly (i.e. don't expect a response if you send me email) and I will try hard to avoid reading any blogs or keeping up with what's new in the world of web design and development.

The current plan is to return some time in September, but don't take that as a promise. Neither do I promise not to break the silence if something that calls for a quick post shows up ;-).

See you later, hope you stay subscribed, and thanks for reading.

Career Paths for Programmers By John Bennett, Jr.
The key to maintaining a good employment outlook in IT, it seems, is to move out of programming and up into more business-oriented IT positions such as systems analyst, business analyst, project manager, or systems architect. However, a computer programmer can't just decide to become a systems analyst or project manager overnight.

Aligning Inner and Outer Visions of Technical Communication: Reflections Beyond Traditional Technical Writing
Technical communication is often misunderstood by those outside the profession or the academic field. These outside perceptions of our work, generally based on extremely limited and narrow notions of the field, can influence the opportunities available to technical communicators. In this paper, three faculty members from the University of Washington's Department of Technical Communication describe their academic assumptions and research activities that range far beyond traditional areas from technical writing such as writing, editing and production. They describe projects that represent the expanding boundaries of the field of technical communication, spanning domains (including medicine, corporate, and public service), methods (including contextual inquiry, content analysis, case studies, and log file analysis), and solution types (including content management, user driven content, computer mediated communication, and strategic management of systems). What these projects share is abroad vision of the field of technical communication and a broad vision of the contributions that technical communication professionals have to offer. IA Summit: Linkosophy
Andrew Hinton’s closing plenary at the 2008 IA Summit detailed why the central concerns of information architecture may be best served by a community of practice.
  • In the past, computer systems were centralized, closed and directed by hierarchy. The Web allowed you to link amongst hierarchies and enabled an explosion of content.
  • Computers are conduits for communication. Content is something to talk about. Information is there for our need for conversation.
  • The Internet sped up conversations by allowing them to move more quickly. The Web is a culture acceleration device.
  • There are cognitive limits to what we can consume. Information & conversation need to be managed and shaped so people can find what they want.
  • This is the central concern of information architecture: how can we shape context and connections in information spaces.
  • Community of Practice: is a group with a shared concern or passion for something. They do it better as they interact regularly. A practice is a shared history of learning. It is conversational.
  • Tendency to think of communities of practice as silos. In user experience design there are no silos. User Experience has multiple facets and they are integrated.
  • We experience semantic context & connection as space. Information represented as bits not atoms. Shaping context & connection is an act of architecture.
  • Information architects shape structures of context & connection for info spaces.
  • How to make sense of the mess of content online so people can get to conversations they need? Library Science was a great place to start making sense of this challenge.
  • First order is physical, second order is metadata (signifiers of physical thing), third order (non-centralized, messy order of how individuals organize all their stuff)
  • Some people think the third order of organization will consume first & second. But just because people can move things around does that negate the need for architecture.
  • Just because inventory can be arranged by users does not mean there is no architecture going on. Only focusing on inventory is a red herring.
  • Have to know the kind of conversation you are designing for. Do you need structure or order –if so how much?
  • Possibility spaces – create frameworks in which people create meaning. We are there to create structure within which people can create their own meaning. Links, Categories, and Rules.
  • Rules: access permissions, algorithmic context/architectures
  • IA is not only about getting people to a piece of information
  • Information is a conduit for context and connection. It’s about useful context & connections in a new kind of space.
  • Each of us tends to identify with a practice – we want to be part of a group: homes for identities.
  • Thing: the designed stuff. Activity: the act of working on the thing (hands on action) Role: the “hat” for the person working on this activity. Practice: shared history of learning among people who affiliate strongly with a role
  • Title: a label one is called does not influence what practice you are a member of.

Talking type in Ljubljana
  • A while ago I was kindly invited to Ljubljana to speak to the local web designers & developers about web typography – how could I resist? My talk last night formed episode 85 of Spletne Urice (Web Hour), a series of weekly talks held in CyberPipe, a café/bar/computer museum/free wifi hotspot in central Ljubljana. It was a thoroughly enjoyable evening, with a good crowd contributing to a excellent Q&A session, which apparently was quite unusual for Slovenes, who claim to be a very reserved nation of people. The slides are available online.

Reserved Slovenes may be, but they are certainly hospitable too. So many thanks must go to Marko, Marko, Jure, Andraž and the guys at Zemanta for keeping me entertained and connected. Thanks also go to Parsek Interactive for getting me there and putting me up.

Speaking of Zemanta, do check it out – it’s a clever way of enhancing the content of your blog posts. By way of Firefox extension, Zemanta analyses your blog post text and suggests photos, links and tags which you can add or remove by a simple click.

The photos are gleaned from sources of CC-licensed images such as Wikimedia Commons and Flickr; the links from various news sources, Wikipedia and Zemanta-enabled blogs; and the tags by text analysis. Zemanta currently works with Wordpress, Blogger, Typepad, LiveJournal, and there’s an API in private testing as we speak.

I should also add the Ljubljana is a lovely city, with the relaxed cafe culture we Brits seem to lust after. The weather was gorgeous for this – my second visit – and I think I’ve been luck enough to see the city in its two best guises: blanketed with snow and bathed in sunshine. The city also has a vibrant web community, with events on almost every night, all run by volunteers. I may well be back again.
